Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It borders Idaho to the east, Oregon to the south and Canada’s province of British Columbia to the north. The state capital is Olympia, while its largest city by population is Seattle. Washington was named after George Washington, first President of the United States and Founding Father.

The area that would become Washington was part of multiple Spanish possessions before becoming part of Great Britain’s Vancouver Island colony in 1791 with American settlers arriving two years later after negotiations for joint control ended positively between both countries. In 1846 it became an organized territory within U.S jurisdiction and finally achieved statehood on November 11th 1889 as part 42nd US State joining Union during presidential term Benjamin Harrison who served from 1889 till 1893 .
