United States Senate by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 90 The United States Senate is the upper chamber of the bicameral legislature of the federal government of the United States, and together with the House of Representatives makes up Congress. It has 100 members—two from each state—and its purpose is to represent states in national legislative matters. Each senator serves a six-year term. The Vice President of the United States serves as president pro tempore (temporary president) when necessary and presides over daily sessions; in their absence, a majority party leader usually fulfills this role. History Under Article Oneof Constitution, which established new federal government framework, congressional representation was divided between two chambers: one composed solely by “the people,” known as House Representatives; and another made up by elected representatives from each state’s legislatures known as Senators. This concept emerged during debates on U.S Constitution among Founding Fathers who wanted to make sure that large or populous states did not have too much power compared smaller ones inside legislative branch.. Initially it was decided that senators would be appointed by respective State Legislatures but 17th Amendment changed process so they are now directly elected citizens just like house representatives . Powers According to constitution ,Senate holds many powers including confirming executive appointments such presidential nominees for Cabinet posts,, Supreme Court justices , ambassadorships etc;; ratifying treaties ; trying impeachments cases against public officials accused misconducts ; approving legislation passed through other house i e passing bills into law . These responsibilities combined with fact senate has less numbers than lowerhouse means every member carries bigger influence within decision making processes . Changing landscape As time went on there were some changes introduced regarding how senates operates firstly being introduction committee system which enables senators work more efficiently thus increasing workloads done per session . With increase diversity population due immigration number female Hispanic African American Asians serving senate also increased drastically ranging 20% – 25 % currently depending political affiliation parties .. Additionally rules got revised certain points allowing filibusters quicker processing while technology improved opportunities better communication constituents beyond physical boundaries giving individuals even further reach access information resources influencing decisions taken higher ranks offices..
