Headquartered in New York City, the UN has grown to become one of the most influential global organizations with 193 Member States. The UN’s mission is based on its Charter which sets out four main objectives: maintaining international peace and security; developing friendly relations among nations; promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights; and achieving cooperation between countries for solving international problems of an economic or social nature. The United Nations was created at the end of World War II by 51 countries committed to preserving future generations from the scourge of war through collective security measures. The original members drafted a charter that set forth their commitment towards creating a peaceful world order governed by law rather than brute force – thus establishing itself as more than just another intergovernmental body but instead focusing primarily on protecting fundamental human rights around the globe while also providing humanitarian assistance when needed. Since then, new member states have joined making it one of today’s largest inter-government organizations worldwide representing almost all sovereign nation-states across six continents . Represented within its halls are multiple languages spoken daily including English, French and Spanish – all three designated official working languages used during discussions throughout various committees such General Assembly meetings or Security Council deliberations..
