The United Kingdom government is composed of the central government, devolved national administrations and local governments. The UK is a unitary state with constitutional monarchy as its form of governance and a parliamentary system for decision-making. Executive power rests in the hands of the Prime Minister and their Cabinet, who are collectively accountable to Parliament. Legislative authority resides in both Westminster parliamentarians elected by universal suffrage (for England & Wales), Scottish MPs representing constituencies within Scotland, Welsh AMs representing electoral regions in Wales; Northern Ireland Assembly members from 18 constituencies across Northern Ireland plus an additional four delegates appointed to represent minority interests; while judicial powers rest with independent courts headed by senior judges subject to review at appeal level through Supreme Court justices sitting on behalf of Her Majesty’s Courts Service or other appeals body such as tribunals or commissions established under special legislation.
