United Auto Workers by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 62 The United Auto Workers (UAW) is an American labor union founded in 1935. It represents workers employed by the automobile, truck, and parts manufacturers across the United States and Canada. The UAW has over 400,000 members in both countries combined. History In May of 1935, delegates from local auto worker unions met to form a national organization for collective bargaining rights and better working conditions at their respective plants; thus forming the UAW or “United Automobile Workers.” This was during a time when organized labor was gaining traction as a movement within America’s industrial workforce. In 1937 they held their first convention which officially established them as a union and set forth principles that would guide their future actions such as democracy amongst its ranks, equal pay for men and women alike despite race or religion etc.. As well as establishing goals like improving standards of living through higher wages/benefits while safeguarding job security with seniority rights among other things. Organizational Structure/Affiliations: Due to it being one of largest Union’s within North America today (with membership estimated around 390k according to 2019 figures); Its structure consists three main offices located in Detroit Michigan US + Windsor Ontario CA along w/over 600+ local affiliates spread throughout cities towns & rural locations where automotive-related employment exists respectively together these entities make up what makes “the Union” .
