by Joshua Brown

The UCLA Bruins Women’s Basketball team is the intercollegiate basketball program representing the University of California, Los Angeles. The team currently competes in the Pac-12 Conference and plays its home games at Pauley Pavilion on campus in Westwood, Los Angeles.

History
1969–70 season to present (Nell Fortner era)

The UCLA Bruins women’s basketball program began during their 1969–70 season with a record of 8 wins and 4 losses under head coach Billie Moore. Since then, they have had moderate success throughout their tenure as an NCAA Division I varsity sport including five appearances in the Sweet Sixteen round of NCAA Championships from 1982 through 1985 and most recently in 2004 when they were eliminated by eventual champion UConn Huskies. Their overall record stands at 699 wins against only 412 losses since inception.
In 2019 Nell Fortner was announced as Head Coach replacing Cori Close who left for Florida Gators following 11 seasons leading the Bruin’s squad which included three straight 20+ win campaigns from 2016 to 2018 culminating with a 24-7 record during her final year which saw them qualify for an eighth consecutive postseason appearance thanks largely due to stellar backcourt play by Jordin Canada & Monique Billings who helped lead them into Round 32 before being ousted by Mississippi State Bulldogs 67–66 ending what would be their deepest run ever made within that tournament format stretching all way back until 1970!

Notable players/coaches

Over years there has been no shortage talent coming out UCLA so it should come surprise some notable names like Ann Meyers Drysdale (1978 Naismith Player Year), Natalie Williams (1994 Wade Trophy winner), Maylana Martin Douglas (1998 WNBA #1 draft pick) or any number other former players turned coaches such Lisa Leslie(4x Olympic Gold Medalist). Add current coaching staff led up Hall Fame inductee Nell Fortner along with Associate Head Coaches Tony Newnan Chrystal Cleveland plus rest support staff one can easily see why this storied university continues remain relevant amongst nation’s elite programs even after more than half century competition!
