It was established in 1947, replacing the War Department and merging with the Navy Department. The DoD is headed by a Secretary of Defense, who has statutory authority under Title 10 U.S.C., Section 113(b), to conduct all necessary business for national defense matters within their jurisdiction as provided in law and regulations prescribed by Congress or directed by the President consistent with applicable laws enacted by Congress. Organizationally, it consists of three branches: Army; Air Force; and Navy/Marine Corps/Coast Guard (all falling under “Department of the Navy”). The National Security Agency (NSA) serves an important role in providing intelligence support for DoD activities across these services but does not fall directly within any service branch’s command structure itself due to reporting solely up through Directorates at Headquarters level instead–though most NSA personnel deployed abroad will be embedded into specific operational units depending on mission needs such as SIGINT battalions attached to infantry divisions during wartime deployments etc). Additionally there are other subordinate organizations such as those responsible for research & development like DARPA or various combatant commands which lead joint operations around world typically overseen alongside corresponding civilian agencies such State Dept.’s AFRICOM operations supporting humanitarian efforts throughout Africa while maintaining security ties between US allies operating in region etc..
