The Edge by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 61 The Edge is the stage name of David Howell Evans, an Irish musician best known as a guitarist and backing vocalist for rock band U2. Born in 1961 in Barking, Essex to Welsh parents Garvin and Gwenda Evans, he moved with his family to Dublin at the age of two. He began playing guitar when he was fourteen years old after receiving an acoustic guitar from his mother as a Christmas present. After forming U2 with schoolmates Larry Mullen Jr., Adam Clayton and Bono in 1976, The Edge has become one of the most influential figures within alternative music culture over several decades due to both his involvement with U2’s iconic albums such as Joshua Tree (1987), Achtung Baby (1991) and All That You Can’t Leave Behind (2000). In addition to being part of U2’s musical projects since their inception, The Edge has also collaborated on various other musical endeavors including producing tracks for Howie B’s Snatch soundtrack album Music For Babies; composing themes for television shows like Third Watch; performing live alongside jazz artist Herbie Hancock; contributing studio work on Rattle & Hum by Willie Nelson; guest appearing on songs such as “Gone Daddy Gone” by Violent Femmes; working extensively along side Brian Eno throughout much of U2’s career up until 2009’s No Line On The Horizon LP ; writing orchestral scores on numerous film soundtracks – notably Million Dollar Hotel directed by Wim Wenders – while releasing solo works under his birth name “David Evans” starting back in 1985 under Island Records’ subsidiary label Mother Records. As well-known around world stages today just as much during earlier days when touring stadiums across Europe or USA alike , many fans have come away enchanted not only through hearing but witnessing how uniquely talented this exceptional player can be — it often seems that every time you turn your head there appears another defining moment brought forth out onto crowds everywhere courtesy Mr. ‘Edge’.
