The Texas Longhorns are a collegiate athletic program of the University of Texas at Austin. The school’s teams, nicknamed “the Horns,” compete in Division I sports and the Big 12 Conference. The men’s teams include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming & diving, tennis and track & field; while women’s teams consist of basketball (which is also offered to male students), cross country/track & field (also available to males), equestrianism (co-ed), rowing (co-ed) soccer softball volleyball and sand volleyball.

The mascot for all Longhorn athletics is Bevo – an anthropomorphized steer with orange eyes that first appeared in 1916 by student George Bittner as part of a campus prank on rival team A&M Aggies which he later adopted as the official mascot for UT Athletics. Since then it has become one of college sports’ most recognizable symbols due to its presence both on game days across multiple venues around Austin or nationally televised events such as bowl games or March Madness brackets .

Since beginning competition in 1893 , Longhorns have won numerous NCAA National Championships including 4 Football titles from 1963–2005 seasons when under legendary coach Darrell Royal ‘ s leadership they enjoyed great success over archrival Oklahoma Sooners who were their main opponent during those years.. This period was known as “Golden Era”of UT football where many notable players went onto NFL careers after graduating such legends like Earl Campbell Ricky Williams Vince Young Colt McCoy amongst others making them go down history books alongside Coach Royal himself who still stands today considered among best ever coaches regardless sport level.. Additionally other programs within department have had remarkable accomplishments well throughout university history winning 28 combined national championships between Tennis Swimming Men’s Track Field Women’s Basketball Softball Soccer Equestrian Rowing Baseball respectively highlighting rich tradition excellence not just limited gridiron but any given venue outside stadium walls too!

In regard traditions involving longhorn fans these range anywhere from iconic songs sung before kickoff Beat Tech Cheer Hear ye hear ye fight song Burn Orange spirit rally forming shape state flower symbolizing unity strength staying true colors no matter how far away home may be … Furthermore rivalry held against both former Southwest conference foes now current big 12 opponents like Baylor TCU Oklahoma State long standing grudge match vs aggies each year thanks Thanksgiving day clash that makes up annual holiday weekend full entertainment bone crushing hits endless cheers roar crowd thus creating unique atmosphere every single time two schools meet !
