Tennessee state government by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 52 Tennessee state government is the governmental structure of Tennessee, a U.S. state in the southeastern United States. The government of Tennessee is divided into three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. The Constitution of Tennessee establishes the basic framework for the government’s organization and assigns specific powers to each branch as well as reserves rights to citizens by enumerating them in article 1 section 2-24. Executive Branch The governor is head of this branch with limited powers; primarily executing laws passed by legislature such as budgeting, appointing department heads (commissioners), and issuing pardons or commutations for criminal sentences upon recommendation from Board Of Parole . All other offices are elected independently including Secretary Of State , Attorney General , Comptroller , Treasurer And Commissioner For Agriculture . Other departments include Transportation Highway Patrol, Military Department & Environment Health Services Legislative Branch This branch consists of two houses – Senate (33 members) and House Of Representatives (99 members). Both houses elect their own speaker who presides over proceedings, introduce bills on behalf Legislature’s agenda etc., but it’s Governor who has power to veto any bill passed by both chambers if he/she disagrees with its provisions or wording before signing off on it officially thereby making law applicable within jurisdiction Judicial Branch Supreme Court serves at Apex body while court system includes Circuit Courts & Chancery courts adjudicating cases related civil litigation / divorce matters etc., Judges are appointed through election process conducted every 8 years after which they serve 6 year term followed another round selection Local Governments Each county has its own local governing body consisting Mayor & Council Members assisted municipal staff providing services like police protection firefighting health care maintenance roads garbage collection etc.. There also several townships cities spread across whole area whose administrations fall under respective County governments’ purview As per 2020 census report population was estimated around 68 million people most whom reside urban areas concentrated towards Nashville Memphis Chattanooga Clarksville Jackson Cookeville Maryville Johnson City Cleveland Murfreesboro Franklin Bartlett Kingsport Hendersonville Lebanon Gallatin Smyrna Hixson Collierville Columbia Shelbyville Lawrenceburg Athens Dayton La Vergne Tullahoma Dyersburg
