Switzerland by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 70 Switzerland (German: Schweiz, French: Suisse, Italian: Svizzera), officially the Swiss Confederation is a country situated in western Europe. It has borders with France to the west; Germany to the north; Austria and Liechtenstein to the east; and Italy to its south. Switzerland comprises 26 cantons which are divided into three main linguistic regions – German in the north, French in the west and Italianspeaking areas along its Mediterranean coast – making it one of only four countries that have an official language from each of these groups. Its population numbers approximately 8 million people. The capital city is Bern while Zurich is considered as its largest city with 400 thousand inhabitants. The ancient history of Switzerland dates back hundreds of years long before modern day formation when early Neolithic tribes settled there during 4000 BC-2000BC period giving rise to Celtic culture after 500BC followed by Roman rule between 58 BC-400AD resulting in Christianization within 4th century AD transforming most parts into feudal society under powerful dukes who eventually formed first independent alliances leading towards independence until 1315 when they were unified as single nation known today as “Confederacy”.
