South Sudan by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 73 South Sudan (Arabic: جنوب السودان, Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān al-Gharbiyyah) is a landlocked country in East-Central Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Central African Republic (CAR) to the west. South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan on July 9th 2011 after an overwhelming majority voted for separation in a referendum six months prior. The capital city of South Sudan is Juba which was declared so during its secession from northern rival Khartoum on July 9th 2005 when Southern autonomy was granted under terms set out in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between north and south signed two years earlier. The nation has been largely unstable since gaining independence due mainly because of civil war that began shortly after breaking away from North with violence continuing until 2018 when peace agreements were made between ruling government parties SPLM/A–IO led by Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon and SSPDF led by Salva Kiir Mayardit ending five year conflict resulting over 1 million people dead or displaced . There have also been allegations of human rights abuses against both sides including extrajudicial killings arbitrary arrests torture rape recruitment child soldiers among other violations committed throughout duration conflict . Despite this fragile state situation remains relatively stable today with ongoing process national reconciliation rebuilding infrastructure economy providing basic services citizens such as education health care sanitation etc… In recent years new laws put place give greater protection women children reduce tribal tensions help resolve local disputes establish rule law create environment economic growth thus improving overall quality life population despite persistent poverty rampant corruption weak judicial system lack investment resources make it difficult fully implement these reforms…. The official language spoken much South Sudanese population Nuer Dinka Arabic English while primary religion Christianity minority groups practice traditional religions Islam Hinduism Baha’i faiths In addition culture strongly influenced centuries long contact nearby countries peoples richly diverse lifestyle customs beliefs making them unique yet still part larger African continent.. Currently estimated population around 11 million people many whom depend subsistence farming herding well international relief aid survive day day basis As result food insecurity malnutrition high especially amongst children who more likely die before reaching age 5 than anywhere else world…
