The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team represents the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. The school competes in NCAA Division I and is a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The current head coach is Dawn Staley, who took over prior to the 2008-09 season. Under her direction, USC has won three consecutive SEC regular season titles from 2011 to 2013 and one SEC Tournament title in 2014. In 2015 they made their first Final Four appearance since joining the conference for that year’s tournament.

The program began as an independent before joining its first conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), during its inaugural 1981–82 campaign where it posted a record of 24 wins and 5 losses under head coach Nancy Wilson. After competing as an independent again through 1989-90, they joined the Metro Conference starting with 1990–91 until 1995 when they moved into their most recent home -the SEC-. During this time period USC had some success making four NCAA appearances: 1996 (Sweet 16), 1998 (1st round loss) 2001(2nd Round Loss) & 2003(1st Round Loss). They also advanced two NITs: 2004 & 2006 reaching both quarterfinals but falling short on advancing further after losing each game by less than 10 points combined .

In April 2007 then Temple University Head Coach Dawn Staley was hired by Athletic Director Eric Hyman taking over for Susan Walvius who had been at helm since 2002 finishing out her tenure with 3 straight 20 plus win seasons including a 25-9 mark during 2005-06 which ended in 2nd place finish behind Tennessee within eastern division standings earning them 1st ever top seed into post season play attaining No 8 ranking nationally highest up untill that point.. Since then Staley lead Gamecocks have gone onto appear every March Madness except 2009 while also making Sweet Sixteen twice , Elite Eight Once along with aforementioned trip all way towards championship final being held at Indianapolis Indiana back 2016 edition eventually bowing down co eventual national Champion Mississippi State Bulldogs ending run just shy ultimate goal yet still bringing immense pride entire state university community alike much more importantly laying foundation future success be achieved coming years ahead building upon said positive momentum created previous campaigns going forth.]]
