Snooker and billiards by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 43 Snooker and billiards are two cue sports that have been popular for centuries. Although they have many similarities, there are some important differences between them as well. The origins of both games can be traced back to the 16th century in Europe where a leather-covered ball was used on tables with raised sides and green cloth covers. The game has evolved over time, but the basic rules remain largely unchanged since then – players take turns potting balls into pockets using a white cue ball and 22 coloured object balls arranged in triangular patterns around the table. Players score points by pocketing their own colour of object ball or knocking one of their opponents’ off the table entirely. One key difference between snooker and billiards is that snooker uses small round pockets while billiard tables use larger rectangular openings at each corner which make it easier to sink more than one type of shot during play such as bankshots or combinations shots (where two different types need to be hit). Another difference is that while most forms of billiards require three balls, snooker requires all fifteen reds plus six additional colours; yellow, green brown blue pink black (in order from lowest value up). Snookers also features more complex scoring systems compared to other variations like 8 Ball Pool or 9 Ball Pool which only involve sinking specific groups/patterns rather than individual point values per shot taken as seen in traditional forms like Carom Billiards . Finally ,the size dimension ratio varies too: A full-size English snooker table measures 12ft x 6ft whereas an American pool table may measure anywhere from 7ft – 10 ft depending on its purpose eg coin operated bar style vs professional tournament grade etc.. While these differences may seem minor ,they do affect how each sport’s played & enjoyed by fans worldwide making it easy for even experienced enthusiasts differentiate between them when playing either game professionally / casually regardless if its’ indoors/outdoors environment etc…
