Shanghai by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 62 Shanghai (Chinese: 上海; pinyin: Shànghǎi) is the most populous city in China and one of the most populous cities in the world. Located on the Yangtze River Delta, it has a population of over 24 million people as of 2020. It is also a global financial center and transportation hub, with many international companies having their headquarters there, including several Fortune 500 companies. The city was founded during the Tang Dynasty, around 751 AD by fishermen from Huating County near modern-day Qingpu District. In 1292 Shanghai officially became an administrative county under Chinese rule making it one of China’s oldest cities that has continued to exist until today. By 1842 Shanghai had become an important port for foreign traders which sparked its rapid growth into becoming an international metropolis by 1930s through economic development policies implemented by prominent figures such as Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai Shek who then established major industry hubs there while transforming its infrastructure further advancing its development up until today where it now boasts some impressive skyscrapers such as Jin Mao Tower or The Oriental Pearl TV Tower both standing at 468 meters tall respectively being among some of tallest buildings not only in Asia but also worldwide along with dozens more landmark structures scattered across this bustling megalopolis skyline giving proof to its immense success story throughout centuries that still continues to grow even stronger each day!
