Sexual health by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 56 Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences free from coercion, discrimination and violence. Sexual health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity; it implies a positive sense of wellbeing with respect to one’s own body image, emotions related to one’s intimate life (love/relationship)& pleasure derived out thereof. The concept has been evolving over time since its initial introduction by WHO in 1975 & encompasses reproductive rights & responsibilities for both genders including access to information about contraception methods & services such as STD testing etc., understanding gender roles within society at large & finally an individual’s ability enjoy their sex lives without fear or shame. The World Health Organisation defines four key elements that constitute sexual health: # Accessible comprehensive knowledge on human reproduction, STDs prevention strategies (e.g condom use), healthy lifestyle choices etc., # Respectful attitude towards all aspects discussed above pertaining especially but not limited exclusively to gender equality # Capacity for mutual joyous expression between partners through non-coercive activities # Ability recognize risk factors associated with sexual activity , make informed decisions regarding potential consequences e..g pregnancy /STIs transmission -and take protective measures if necessary when engaging in intercourse . In particular this includes advocating further research into issues surrounding young people’s abilities understand risks they are exposed while engaging sexually active lifestyles during their formative years ; taking steps ensure that healthcare professionals possess adequate training enable them provide quality advice patients seeking guidance concerning any aspect aforementioned topics; additionally raising awareness public opinion general population so that stigma attached discussing sensitive matters might be reduced , thus facilitating open dialogue between members community who would otherwise refrain talking publicly due said reasons .
