Scotland by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 77 Scotland is a country in northwest Europe and part of the United Kingdom. It occupies the northern third of Great Britain, sharing borders with England to its south and Wales to its west. Scotland’s capital city is Edinburgh, while Glasgow is its largest city. Other major cities include Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness. With an estimated population of 5 million people, it makes up nearly one-third of the UK’s population density. The official languages are English and Scots Gaelic (Gàidhlig). Historically known as Caledonia by ancient Romans who occupied southern parts from AD43 until 400AD when they were driven out by Picts (an ancient Scottish tribe), much mystery still surrounds early Scotland which was not unified into one kingdom until 843AD under Kenneth I MacAlpin – this unification led to what we now know today as ‘The Kingdom of Scotland’. Throughout history Scotland had strong ties with France due to their shared Catholic religion though wars against each other did occur during medieval times such as The Auld Alliance War between 1295–1560 where both countries fought side by side against England in numerous battles including at Bannockburn 1314 where Robert Bruce defeated King Edward II’s army leading him eventually on his way towards independence for Scotland from England in 1707 when Acts Of Union passed through parliament uniting them together forevermore forming ‘Great Britain’ yet maintaining some autonomy over certain aspects such as law courts & education system etc.. This union went onto create a formidable world power that dominated global affairs for centuries thereafter culminating ultimately most notably after WW2 ended 1945 marking end British Empire ruling many colonies around world spanning decades prior!
