Sayfullo Saipov

Sayfullo Saipov (born March 9, 1988) is an Uzbek national and former truck driver who committed a terrorist attack on October 31, 2017 in New York City. The incident occurred when he drove a rented pickup truck down the West Side Highway bike path for nearly one mile from Houston Street to Chambers Street near Stuyvesant High School before crashing into a school bus at 3:04 PM EDT. Eight people were killed and twelve others injured in the attack.

Saipov was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan but moved to Moscow shortly afterward with his family as refugees of civil unrest during the Soviet-Afghan War. In 2010 he emigrated to the United States under visa lottery program which allows citizens of certain countries with low immigration rates to obtain visas without having any relatives or job offers already residing within America’s borders; this particular loophole has since been closed by President Donald Trump’s administration posthumously following Saipov’s acts of terror . He settled in Paterson, New Jersey where he worked various jobs such as driving Uber cars until 2016 when he became self-employed hauling cargo for Home Depot using rental trucks that were provided by U-Haul company through their ‘Manage Your Move’ platform.

On April 10 2019 jury consisting twelve members unanimously declared guilty 22 counts terrorism related charges ranging from providing material support foreign terrorist organizations using weapon destruction property murder conspiracy causing death serious bodily injury each count carries potential sentence life imprisonment or even possible execution accordance Federal Bureau Prisons Policy Manual yet still awaits sentencing trial court located Manhattan NY June 24 year 2020 .
