Ryuichi Sakamoto (坂本 龍一, born January 17, 1952) is a Japanese composer, singer-songwriter and record producer. He has achieved international acclaim for creating music that combines traditional Japanese sounds with modern electronic elements. His work spans numerous genres including classical, pop/rock and ambient music. He frequently collaborates with other musicians from around the world such as David Sylvian of Japan and Brian Eno of the United Kingdom.

Sakamoto’s career began in 1978 when his debut album Thousand Knives was released to critical acclaim in Japan. This led him to create more experimental works such as B-2 Unit which combined synthesizers with acoustic instruments like taiko drums and koto strings.[1] In 1981 he formed the Yellow Magic Orchestra who went on to become one of the most influential electronic acts ever; they were known for blending together techno-pop beats with jazz fusion synths.[2] As part of YMO he wrote some very well known tracks such as “Rydeen” (1979), “Behind The Mask” (1980) and “Technopolis”(1981). Outside of YMO Sakamoto also composed several iconic film scores which include Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence(1983), The Last Emperor(1987)and Little Buddha(1993).[3] His score forThe Revenant earned him an Academy Award nomination in 2016.[4].
In addition to composing original pieces Sakamoto is often called upon by fashion designers from all over the globe due to his unique soundscapes; collaborators have included Comme des Garçons[5], Issey Miyake[6][7], Alexander McQueen [8]among many others . Not only does this reflect how impactful his musical style has been but it also showcases its versatility across different mediums..

Besides being successful musician Ryuichi Sakamota is also an active environmentalist – especially against nuclear power plants – something he became passionate about after witnessing first hand their destructive effects during 2011 Fukushima Daiichi disaster while recording near Sendai [9]. To further advance these causes he founded two organizations: “Noble Earth” – dedicated towards green energy advocacy & education – alongside co founding Rokkashomura Music School designed specifically so children can learn music free charge at a rural village located near Fukushima itself.[10][11].

Overall Ryuichi Sakomoto stands today not just as renowned artist but social activist whose works continue timelessly influence generations come decades later
