Religion is a set of beliefs and practices often organized around supernatural and moral claims. Many religions have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred histories that are intended to give meaning to life or to explain the origin of life or the universe. Religions may contain symbolic stories, which are sometimes said by followers to be true; however these stories may take on many forms such as myths, legends or folk tales. The study of religion encompasses a wide variety of academic disciplines including theology, comparative religion and social scientific studies.

The history of religious belief dates back thousands if not millions of years with some evidence suggesting early human societies were animistic in nature – believing all things contained spirits that required appeasing through ritual offerings for example animal sacrifices or special ceremonies at certain sites in order for individuals within those groups receive good fortune from their gods/spirits etc… As humans developed more complex societies so too did our understanding about how best appease the divine forces we believed controlled fate whether it be an individual’s luck in battle, success planting crops etc… In time this gave rise various early organised religious systems like Hinduism & Buddhism (India), Judaism(Israel) Christianity (Rome) Islam(Middle East-Arabia).

Today there is still great diversity among world religions involving different types worship styles – ranging from monotheistic faiths focused upon one God deity e.g Christianity / Islam , pantheistic views where divinity exists across multiple deities e..g Hinduism Shintoism , Animist communities who believe everything has its own spirit force energy requiring attention care respect – typically found tribal cultures Africa Asia Americas .
