Privacy by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 70 Privacy is the right to keep personal information confidential and secure from unauthorized access. It encompasses a variety of different rights, including the right to be left alone, control over one’s data and images, protection from surveillance or tracking by governments or corporations, as well as other forms of unwanted intrusion into one’s life. Privacy has become an increasingly important issue in today’s digital age due to advances in technology that make it easier for governments and private companies alike to collect large amounts of data about individuals without their knowledge or consent. The concept of privacy can be traced back centuries when English philosopher John Locke wrote “all men are created equal” and argued everyone had natural rights such as property ownership which should not be infringed upon by others. In 1890 American jurist Samuel Warren & Louis Brandeis published “The Right To Privacy” where they discussed how invasions on people’s private lives were becoming more frequent with the invention of photography & newspapers publishing stories based on gossiping neighbors; this was seen as a violation against civil liberties since there wasn’t any formal law protecting citizens’ privacy at that time so they proposed new laws making it illegal for anyone else besides family members or close friends to invade someone else’s private affairs without permission (i.e., respect another person’s reasonable expectation). This would eventually lead up until 1968 when US Congress passed The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), which expanded existing protections under wiretapping laws but also limited government agencies access/use certain types electronic information such as emails stored on third-party servers like Gmail etcetera unless authorized via court order firstly—this laid down groundworks enabling current debates regarding Internet freedom versus security concerns revolving around cybercrime prevention policies etcetera nowadays . In Europe however many countries have adopted stronger measures towards defending citizenry entryway through General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018 legislation requiring businesses operating within EU borders comply with stricter protocols surrounding usage customer information collected online – though even still debate exists whether these regulations go far enough protect users given recent revelations concerning corporate giants harvesting user data malicious purposes while avoiding face penalties doing so either way overall consensus appears favor greater emphasis placed individual autonomy regards matter according opinion poll conducted European Commission 2019 results showed nearly three quarters respondents believing consumers deserved absolute say what happens theirs regardless context situation might entail ultimately only future tell if world leaders continue enact appropriate legislative safeguards securing fundamental freedoms generations come remain enjoy same degree measure afforded us now day forward meanwhile ordinary folk must rely self-awareness coupled increased caution exercising activities online safeguard themselves best extent possible Ultimately, privacy is an essential human right integral part living healthy society – understanding importance maintaining proper balance between public safety needs individual liberty paramount ensuring populations all backgrounds protected both physical spiritual harm brought intrusive technologies growing concern amongst global population present moment prompting calls action legislators everywhere strive ensure necessary legal infrastructure place guard against nefarious uses potentially disastrous outcomes arising out unchecked technological advancements moving forthwith
