Pete Buttigieg by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 61 Pete Buttigieg (born January 19, 1982) is an American politician serving as the 32nd and current Mayor of South Bend, Indiana since 2012. He was a Democratic candidate for President of the United States in the 2020 election before dropping out on March 1, 2020. Early life and education Buttegieg was born in South Bend to Joseph A. Buttigieg Jr., who had emigrated from Malta at age nine with his parents, and Anne Montgomery Miller Buttigieg, a professor at Saint Mary’s College. His father worked as an economist for companies including Honeywell International Inc.. Pete attended St Joseph High School graduating with honors in 2000; he went on to attend Harvard University where he graduated magna cum laude receiving his Bachelor’s degree in History & Literature then received his Master’s degree from Pembroke College Cambridge . After college graduation he enlisted into military service becoming a lieutenant in Navy Reserve Intelligence program 2013-2017 after which returned back home to work full time politics starting 2015 supporting Obama campaign efforts . He ran unsuccessfully against incumbent mayor Steve Luecke that same year but won by landslide victory four years later when running again mayor office 2016 elections due strong support community members , especially younger generations whom admired him forward thinking policies promoting sustainability reform throughout city administration initiatives such as “Smart Streets: Reimagining Main Street” project aimed redeveloping downtown area create more efficient public transportation system through light rail expansion In 2019 announced presidential candidacy joining crowded field democratic candidates thus becoming first openly gay man seeking nomination major political party primary history USA On May 14th 2019 released plans “Doubling Down Rural America” addressing issues facing rural communities across America poverty health care access infrastructure investments etc proposal gained attention both sides aisle being praised Republican Senator Lindsey Graham well Democrats Senators Tom Harkin Cory Booker respectively On November 24th following disappointing showings Iowa caucus New Hampshire primary dropped out race endorsing Joe Biden instead shortly afterwards endorsed Bernie Sanders during April endorsement rally Vermont senator Despite withdrawing candidacy earlier buttigeigs widespread recognition brought increased focus youth vote within Democratic Party something many saw evidence success future runs higher offices if chooses pursue them
