It is situated on the banks of the Illinois River and has a population of 115,007 as per 2019 estimates. It serves as an important regional hub for economy, transportation, education and culture due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major highways – Interstate 74 (I-74)and U.S. Route 24 (US 24). The area around Peoria was initially inhabited by Native Americans including Illiniwek tribes who lived along rivers such as Mackinaw Creek before being displaced by European settlers during 19th century when first settlements were established here in 1824 following arrival of Fort Clark garrison from St Louis in Missouri which brought influx of American frontiersmen into area till it’s incorporation into town charter 5 years later under name ‘Peoria’ supposedly derived from Indian word meaning ‘place where we play’.
