Penn State Nittany Lions men’s basketball by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 50 The Penn State Nittany Lions men’s basketball team is the NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s basketball program representing Pennsylvania State University. The Nittany Lions compete in the Big Ten Conference of NCAA Division I and are coached by Patrick Chambers. The team plays its home games at the 15,261-seat Jordan Center on campus in University Park, Pennsylvania. Penn State has appeared twice in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament: once as a regional finalist in 1954 and again as an Elite 8 participant (reaching to their first Final Four) during the 2020 tournament under head coach Pat Chambers. PSU also made one appearance each in both National Invitation Tournaments (NIT), reaching quarterfinals for 2021 after beating 3rd seed Memphis Tigers 83–75 on March 24th. They have won two conference championships; 1951 Southern Conference regular season title and 1992 Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship led by current assistant coach Dereck Whittenburg who scored game winning jump shot at buzzer against Robert Morris 82–81 . The Nittany Lions have had success throughout their history with a total of three players being drafted into NBA since 1950 including most notable Calvin Booth who was selected 42nd overall pick to Seattle SuperSonics back 1999 . In addition , John Amaechi became first player from school ever taken 1st round when he was chosen 30th overall 1997 draft class Orlando Magic..
