Palm Springs by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 59 Palm Springs is a desert resort city in Riverside County, California, United States. It is located approximately 110 miles (177 km) east of Los Angeles and 130 miles (209 km) northeast of San Diego. The population was 44,552 at the 2010 census. Palm Springs covers approximately 94 square miles (240 km2), making it the largest city in Riverside County by land area. Palm Springs has become an international destination for relaxation and recreation due to its year-round sunshine and warm temperatures which attract snowbirds from all around North America during winter months as well as other tourists throughout the rest of the year. Popular activities include golfing, tennis, shopping on El Paseo Drive or hiking in nearby Joshua Tree National Park or Mt San Jacinto State park via one of two aerial tramways that ascend over 8500 feet into the mountainside above town offering views across several mountain ranges including portions of Death Valley National Park visible 90 miles away across Coachella Valley’s lower elevations on clear days . The city first developed as a popular tourist destination with Hollywood celebrities such as Frank Sinatra visiting regularly beginning when he bought property there with his Rat Pack pals Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr in 1947 followed later by Bob Hope who built his estate here along with many other stars like Marilyn Monroe who were often seen vacationing together here leading to its moniker “Hollywood’s Playground” In recent years Palm Spring has become more LGBTQ friendly through events such White Party Week held annually each spring besides being identified internationally for its mid century modern style architecture pioneered by local architects like Albert Frey whose iconic Tramway Gas Station building still stands today alongside designs from Richard Neutra , E Stewart Williams & John Lautner among others Today Palm Spring also serves host to numerous annual events including both music festivals such Music Fest or Modernism Week drawing people from far beyond Southern California bringing attention back once again toward this classic US getaway spot
