Oregon state government by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 54 Oregon state government is the governmental structure of the U.S. state of Oregon as established by its constitution and laws, including executive, legislative, and judicial branches which serve to govern its citizens. The current governor is Kate Brown (D) who assumed office in 2015 after being appointed by then-Governor John Kitzhaber following his resignation from office due a scandal involving his fiancée’s involvement with an energy company.. The bicameral legislature consists of a lower house – the House of Representatives – made up of 60 members elected for two year terms; and an upper house – the Senate – consisting 30 members also elected for two year terms. Both houses meet at the State Capitol in Salem during yearly session that begins on odd numbered years every January 8th with no limits on how long they can stay in session nor any restrictions on what legislation may be introduced or discussed. There are several committees within each chamber dedicated to studying specific issues such as education or taxation so that bills addressing those topics can be properly crafted before they reach full floor consideration thus ensuring better informed policy making decisions when it comes time to vote them into law. In addition to their legislative duties, both chambers are responsible for electing statewide officers such as Secretary Of State, Treasurer and Attorney General amongst others; confirming gubernatorial appointments; ratifying constitutional amendments proposed either by initiative petition or through regular legislative action; impeaching officials found guilty of misconduct while serving public offices; proposing new taxes & fees needed for revenue generation purposes along with providing oversight over existing ones already levied upon taxpayers throughout Oregon’s 36 counties ; conducting inquiries into matters related but not limited exclusively too official malfeasance committed under color authority granted via statutes passed by previous legislatures etc… .
