Ohio is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. It is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to the east, Kentucky and Indiana to the south, and Michigan to the northwest. Ohio is one of fifty states that make up America; it was admitted into union on March 1st 1803 as part of The Northwest Ordinance Act. Columbus serves as its capital city with Cleveland being its largest city; other major cities include Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron and Dayton.

The name “Ohio” comes from an Iroquoian word meaning “great river”. This refers to both Ohio’s main waterway -the Ohio River- which forms much of its southern border with Kentucky and West Virginia ,as well as numerous smaller rivers throughout this heavily forested land . Occupying approximately 44000 square miles (114500 km2),it ranks 34th among US states in size but has highest population density out all non coastal regions at 274 people per square mile(107/km2).
