by Joshua Brown

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team represents The Ohio State University in NCAA Division I college basketball. The school competes in the Big Ten Conference, where the Buckeyes have won or shared 24 regular season titles and 8 tournament championships since their first season of competition during the 1901–02 campaign. As of 2020, they had a total record of 2232 wins and 1094 losses over 108 seasons.

History

The program is one of two schools to reach 1,000 victories (Kansas being the other) before suffering its first loss at home—a 66-61 defeat by Cincinnati on December 21st, 1914—and was also one of four programs to win its initial dozen games without a loss (the others being Kansas from 1903–1904 through 1904–05; Texas from 1906–07 through 1907–08; and Georgia Tech from 1910–11). It has been ranked as high as No. 3 nationally for individual weeks throughout different points during each year’s respective campaigning periods between 1955-56 and 1975-76 with six Final Four appearances over that span including a national championship victory against Michigan in 1960 led by future NBA Hall Of Famer John Havlicek.

Since then, OSU has gone on to capture 14 additional conference crowns with seven outright while sharing another seven times among various groups within both divisions across 37 years until 1997 when Jim O’Brien took charge leading them into yet another golden era which included five consecutive postseasons highlighting three Sweet Sixteen trips sandwiched around an Elite Eight appearance along with top 25 rankings attained annually all but once up until his unexpected resignation after 2003 amid allegations involving recruiting violations leading to further sanctions imposed upon it due primarily towards self-imposed penalties consisting mainly related reductions impacting scholarship allotments amongst incoming student athletes seeking admission thereby depriving it access into postseason play altogether for four straight terms prior to 2017 following what some considered would be its darkest period ever experienced having endured only nine winning campaigns out fifteen spanning almost 15 years despite signing several highly touted prospects along multiple coaching changes starting off Thad Matta who compiled 248 wins overall good enough for third best behind Fred Taylor & Harold Olsen respectively thus far setting numerous records such as most nonconference road victories tying Dean Smith’s feat set more than sixty years earlier claiming two league titles plus ten tourney berths highlighted by backtobackSweet 16 runs followed suit shortly thereafter Chris Holtmann whose tenure saw even greater success earning 116 triumphs reaching heights never seen before rising atop standings succeeding capturing banners every single year culminating finally 2018 advancing deepest any squad ever under him notching spot Finals since 1968 ultimately coming three shy second title falling just short Villanova 79 62 concluding marvelous trip amidst celebration big time players drafted pros like DAngelo Russell Keita BatesDiop JaeSean Tate Kaleb Wesson CJ Jackson many more continuing recent resurgence expected continue long standing tradition excellence competed history remain firmly planted upper echelon collegiate level well foreseeable future attracting attention nationwide inspiring next generation hoopers making dream playing hallowed halls tangible reality representing Scarlet Gray state proudly together solidifying place hearts worldwide fans alumni alike carrying torch forward carry legacy beyond court room possibly reclaiming throne glory days past secure rank pantheon elite teams country legendary status deservedly earned garnered century competing consistent basis highest levels atmosphere game simply unrivaled unparalleled anywhere else world quote end “O H!”
