Oakland was incorporated in 1852 and has grown to become one of the most populous cities in Northern California with an estimated population of 428,735 as of 2019. The larger metropolitan area surrounding Oakland had an estimated population over 2 million people making it part of the fifth-largest combined statistical area (CSA) in America. The economy within Oakland’s borders is driven primarily by its close proximity to Silicon Valley technology companies such as Facebook, Google and Apple; however, many other businesses have been drawn to this vibrant city including finance, retail trade services and manufacturing industries amongst others. As well as being home to some large corporations like Clorox Company which produces products ranging from household cleaning supplies to health care items; Oakland also serves as hub for several smaller tech startups that are based around Jack London Square – located near downtown on the waterfront – providing numerous opportunities for employment throughout multiple sectors helping drive economic growth within this diverse community .
