Oakland Athletics by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 71 The Oakland Athletics, commonly referred to as the A’s, are an American professional baseball team based in Oakland, California. The Athletics compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. Since 1968, they have played their home games at RingCentral Coliseum or its predecessor venues. The “Athletics” name originates from the late 19th century “athletic clubs”, specifically the Philadelphia Athletics baseball club and Athletic Park which were members of the National Association from 1871-1875 on; it was later used by two other short-lived teams before being appropriated by Phillips & Co., owners of Bob Quinn’s original minor league version of the A’s after 1902. Along with most other major sports franchises that had been around for some time prior to 1969 when MLB restructured itself into divisions, Oakland can claim part ownership in several historical firsts—most notably participating in 1901 as one fourth teammates immortalized on Connie Mack’s fabled “White Elephants” roster —the AL champions who beat Pittsburgh Pirates 5–3–1 series victory over Pittsburgh Pirates during inaugural World Series championship tournament held between AL and NL champion pennant winners..
