The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American sports leagues and was founded in 1920 as part of an agreement with two rival organizations to form what would become known as the NFL. Its seventeen-week regular season runs from September to December, with each team playing sixteen games and having one bye week. Following this are three rounds of playoffs which culminate in Super Bowl Sunday, typically held on or around February 5th each year.

Originally called the American Professional Football Association when it was formed in 1920, it changed its name to reflect its broadening scope at various times throughout history: first becoming simply “the Proffesional Football League” before eventually settling on “National Football League” by 1922. It currently consists of thirty-two teams hailing from twenty nine different states; nineteen have their base camps located within cities across California, Florida and Texas while eleven more stretch out along East Coast locations like New York City’s iconic MetLife Stadium – home field for both franchises based there – up through Connecticut into Massachusetts where Foxborough hosts Gillette Stadium for all Patriots’ home games.

The competition operates under a salary cap system that limits how much money any single franchise can spend annually on player salaries; these caps were introduced after protracted negotiations between owners back during 2006’s collective bargaining agreement but have since grown significantly over time due mostly thanks increasing revenues generated by TV rights deals alone estimated at $4 billion USD per annum – not including those made internationally either! All clubs must adhere strictly too these financial regulations otherwise they could face hefty fines or even suspensions from participating altogether depending upon severity level determined following investigations conducted by independent auditors appointed jointly agreed upon by union representatives representing players alongside management figures elected amongst ownership groups respectively involved parties hereof.
