It is located at the eastern end of Long Island, and it consists of five boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island. With a population of 8 million people spread over an area of 790 square miles (2,060 km²), New York City is one of the world’s largest cities by population density. The city was founded as New Amsterdam in 1626 when Dutch traders established a fur trading settlement on Manhattan island. Over subsequent centuries it became a primary port for immigration to America before becoming an important financial center during World War II when its economy shifted from manufacturing to finance and services industries such as banking and law firms. Today over half-a-million companies are based there with many large international corporations having offices or headquarters in NYC due its status as major hub for business activity within North America . In addition to being known for commerce , NYC has also become renowned worldwide for art , culture , dining & nightlife . Famous landmarks including Times Square , Central Park & Broadway make up part iconic skyline which overlooks some popular neighborhoods like Chinatown/Little Italy & Greenwich Village that have thriving entertainment scenes featuring music venues ranging from jazz clubs to punk rock bars .
