New Mexico state government by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 43 New Mexico state government is the governmental structure of New Mexico, a U.S. state in the southwestern United States. It is composed of three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. The current Governor is Michelle Lujan Grisham who took office on January 1st, 2019 for her first term as Governor after being elected on November 6th 2018 with 57% of the vote defeating Republican candidate Steve Pearce. Executive Branch The executive branch consists of six elected officials serving four-year terms: governor; lieutenant governor; secretary of state; attorney general; auditor (state); treasurer (state). All are elected statewide except for lieutenant governor which runs alongside gubernatorial elections every 4 years during presidential election cycles in odd numbered years.. In addition to these constitutional offices there are many other appointed positions including cabinet secretaries that head departments such as health and public education among others responsible for administering various aspects of New Mexican State Government’s programs throughout its 33 counties and numerous cities and townships located across the Land Of Enchantment . Legislative Branch The legislative branch or legislature consists bicameral body made up by an upper chamber Senate consisting 50 members while lower House has 70 representatives all popularly chosen from districts centered around their respective counties from where they serve two year terms before facing reelection . Both chambers meet at Santa Fe capitol building every even calendar year starting January 15th until end April 30 when session ends unless extended under special circumstances . Passing legislation requires majority votes both houses either concurring or disagreeing thus sending it back to committee level resolution if needed prior final adoption into law provided signed off by sitting governors signature should he not veto it beforehand requiring override voting within 60 days period otherwise bill dies completely till readopted next season reintro process starts again .. Judicial Branch Supreme Court stands atop hierarchy leading down through district courts then probates magistrates municipal traffic criminal small claims boards etc hearing cases involving civil commercial domestic family juvenile matters adjudicating disputes ensuring justice delivered according proper legal procedure taking place courtrooms scattered over entire territory jurisdiction covers .. Local Governments & Municipal Authorities each county features locally based authorities vested powers enforce laws ordinances regulations oversee services operations local communities mostly run autonomously although required abide principles laid out governing documents pertains taxes fiscal spending budget management similar areas responsibility de facto part larger unitary framework ensure uniformity standards compliance adequacy objectives set forth higher levels administration..
