New Jersey Devils by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 52 The New Jersey Devils are an American professional ice hockey team based in Newark, New Jersey. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. The club was founded as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974 and moved to Denver, Colorado just two years later; they then relocated to East Rutherford, New Jersey and assumed their current name in 1982. Since entering into existence more than four decades ago, the Devils have been one of America’s most successful NHL franchises. In 1988–89 season—the franchise’s fourth full year at its current home rink—the team won its first division title with a 40-37-7 record under head coach Jim Schoenfeld and finished second overall behind only Wayne Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers for best regular season mark among all teams that year. Two seasons later, they captured their first Stanley Cup championship by defeating Gretzky’s Los Angeles Kings 4 games to 3 during what is widely considered one of greatest Stanley Cup Finals ever played Three additional conference titles were earned between 2000–01and 2011–12 before finally winning another Stanley Cup over Anaheim Ducks on June 6th 2012 after taking them out 7 games to 2 series victory . During this time period , goaltender Martin Brodeur became arguably most iconic player franchise history helping lead them further success highlighted by 5 Vezina trophies , three consecutive William M Jennings awards 830 career wins (most all time) along numerous other records . Today , led captain Andy Greene perennial playoff contender thanks largely core roster pieces such as Taylor Hall Nico Hischier Pavel Zacha Damon Severson Kyle Palmieri Travis Zajac Sami Vatanen Will Butcher goaltenders Cory Schneider Keith Kinkaid .
