Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 52 The Nevada Wolf Pack Men’s Basketball team is the men’s basketball team representing the University of Nevada, Reno (Nevada). The school competes in the Mountain West Conference of NCAA Division I. The Wolf Pack are currently led by head coach Steve Alford and play their home games at Lawlor Events Center on campus. History The Wolfpack first fielded a varsity basketball program during its inaugural 1895-1896 season as an independent university member of the Pacific Coast Basketball Association. During its time within this association, Nevada would claim one conference championship title in 1932 under legendary head coach Edgar Jones before transitioning to non-varsity status until 1953 when it rejoined collegiate athletics as part of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). As members of this athletic league, which later joined with other schools from across California to form what is now known today as present day Big West Conference, they won three consecutive CCAA championships between 1959–1962 and made appearances in NIT tournaments throughout this period. In 1969 they would join fellow former CCAA universities Fresno State & San Jose State along with others who left related conferences such as BYU & Utah into forming two separate divisions that became forerunners for current day Western Athletic Conference (WAC) & Mountain West Conferences respectively where Nevada remains today since joining MWC prior to 1999–2000 season start date. During these periods they have achieved 16 regular season titles including 11 WAC/MWC Championships while making 12 National Invitational Tournament appearances including seven trips since 2000 alone along w/ four berths in NCAA tournament over same span highlighted by acclaimed run through Midwest Regional bracket culminating Sweet Sixteen appearance against eventual national champion Michigan State Spartans during 2004 tourney marking It marked only second ever trip for any MWC member after UNLV back 1990 Final Four squad also helmed by then Rebels’ Head Coach Lon Kruger coincidentally whom took over reigns @ UNR prior 2011 campaign after retiring from his post leading Oklahoma Sooners hoops programs amongst many successful stops spanning numerous decades coaching career.. Despite recent success however true breakthrough occurred recently following hiring previous UCLA Bruins HC Steve Alford June 2017 wherein he quickly assembled exemplary recruiting class featuring standout players such Jordan Brown Caleb Martin Cody MartinLindsey Drew Trey Porter Jazz Johnson plus incoming transfer Kane Milling becoming foundation upon which all past accomplishments were built going forward.. With group joint efforts culminated 2019 MW Championship earning berth onto big dance vs Florida Gators 1st round ultimately losing out opening contest followed closely behind another stellar 2020 showing placing 2nd overall standings fated be cancelled due Covid 19 pandemic outbreak thus preventing potential repeat performance final go around though history still being written regarding successes yet come near future itself depending how things shake up once sports activities resume full swing again…
