Nebraska Cornhuskers by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 57 The Nebraska Cornhuskers, also known as the Huskers, is a college football team representing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The program first began in 1890 and has since become one of the most iconic teams in all of collegiate sports. Since their inception they have won five national championships (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997), with 14 conference titles under their belt as well. They currently compete in Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as part of the Big Ten Conference where they are two-time division winners (2012 & 2014). Nebraska is renowned for its passionate fan base that often refer to themselves simply as “Husker Nation”. Their games at Memorial Stadium attract more than 90 thousand fans who come dressed up wearing red clothing which has been dubbed “red out” days by local media outlets. This tradition started back during homecoming game against Missouri on November 3rd 2001 when over 72 thousand fans showed up wearing entirely red attire to cheer on their favorite team; this was later followed by a record attendance setting 92 thousand plus people showing support for NU during 2003 season opener versus Oklahoma State Cowboys. To add even further excitement many alumni will fly flags above homes or buildings while displaying special banners throughout Lincoln calling attention towards upcoming matches inside city limits leading up each week’s showdown! The mascot for Nebraska Cornhuskers is Herbie Husker who appears various events around campus such sporting competitions like basketball/volleyball games along with other public appearances made at different community functions held within state boundaries including festivals parades etcetera… He wears traditional farm overalls complete big yellow hat always accompanied his trusty sidekick Lil Red an anthropomorphic version corn cob with face painted onto it! Together these mascots bring spirit joy wherever go helping students faculty alike find unity across generations despite any differences may possess from outside world into university walls so everyone can feel connected through shared love athletics pride coming being part something much bigger than ourselves – our beloved hometown squad Go BIG RED!!!
