The Nebraska Cornhuskers football program is the intercollegiate American football team for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln located in Lincoln, Nebraska. The team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of Division I and is a member of the Big Ten Conference.

History: Founded in 1890, the program plays its home games at Memorial Stadium, where it has sold out every game since 1962. The Cornhuskers rank among college football’s most successful teams; they have five national championships (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997), 46 conference championships and eight divisional titles to their name. They are also one of only six programs with over 800 victories—the others being Michigan State Spartans , Texas Longhorns , Ohio State Buckeyes , Alabama Crimson Tide  and Oklahoma Sooners . As a result of this success on-field accomplishments as well as off-field fundraising efforts by former head coach Tom Osborne led to them becoming known throughout much of America simply as “Big Red”. This nickname was famously coined by legendary broadcaster Keith Jackson back when he called ABC Sports’ coverage from 1977 through 2006. According to ESPN College Gameday host Chris Fowler who replaced Jackson after his retirement: “…but no matter how you slice it or dice it or whatever — there will always be something special about Big Red.”
Nebraska first fielded an organized intercollegiate football team during 1891 season under head coach William Copely Jr., but did not become members until two years later due to financial constraints that had arisen following World War II ending up causing them missing several seasons between 1893 – 1895 before finally rejoining what would eventually become today’s NCAA Division I FBS level competition starting 1896 campaign alongside fellow founding National Collegiate Athletic Association member schools such Harvard Crimson & Yale Bulldogs amongst many other notable programs across nation’s then burgeoning collegiate athletics landscape beginning just prior turn century all way through present day still going strong right now more than 120 years later!
