NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 39 The NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, or more commonly known as the March Madness tournament, is an annual single-elimination basketball tournament played each spring in the United States featuring 68 college teams from across the nation. The tournament is organized by and affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). First held in 1939, it was created to determine a national champion for men’s collegiate basketball. Since then, its popularity has grown tremendously and now it’s one of the most watched sporting events of all time. It began with only eight teams competing and that number increased to 64 beginning with 1985 edition until 2021 when four additional play-in games were added bringing up total participants to 68 teams currently. Selection Sunday takes place two days prior to first round of action begins on Thursday afternoon following week which features 32 games over three consecutive days – Thursday through Saturday – resulting in 16 advancing into second round scheduled for next weekend.
