It borders Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast and Albania to the southeast. The capital of Montenegro is Podgorica while its largest city is Nikšić. With an area of 13,812 square kilometers (5,333 sq mi) and an estimated population of 622,359 as of 2019 estimates Montenegro has one of lowest populations among European countries with roughly 2 people per km2 (6 per sq mi). The nation was formerly part of Yugoslavia before it declared independence in 2006 following a referendum that passed by a slim majority making them the second youngest independent state after Kosovo. Prior to declaring independence they were known as Crna Gora which means Black Mountain referring their dark mountainscape along much coastline offering panoramic views over both sea islands such Biograd Island or Sveti Stefan island .
