Michigan State Spartans

The Michigan State Spartans are the athletic teams that represent Michigan State University. The school’s athletic program includes 25 varsity sports teams, which compete in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except women’s rowing and men’s ice hockey, which compete in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Michigan State has been a member of the Big Ten since its founding as an independent institution on February 28th, 1855. It is one of only two universities (the other being Purdue) to have been members since inception. The Spartans currently field 21 intercollegiate programs: baseball; basketball (both men’s and women’s); cross country/track & field (men’s and women’s); football; golf (men’s and women’s); gymnastics; soccer (women’s); softball; tennis( both men' s and Women&#39 ; swimming & diving (Men&# 39 ; track-cross country ); volleyball ; wrestling . Additionally , MSU sponsors five club sport activities : equestrian team , rugby union , synchronized skating , water polo .

The Spartans’ most popular sport is football with attendance figures consistently among some of highest for any university across America each year along with numerous bowl appearances over recent decades including Rose Bowl wins during 1967 season against UCLA Bruins under legendary coach Duffy Daugherty who guided his team to three consecutive national championships between 1965–67 seasons making him first ever head coach at college level achieve such feat despite NCAA not awarding championship titles to schools prior 1972 season when AP poll was established . Other notable accomplishments include 8 Final Fours by Men Basketball Team from 1979-2015 along with National Championship won back 1999 as well good success achieved by wrestlers winning 4 individual title through 2013 .
