Michael Lerner

Michael Lerner (born June 22, 1941) is an American actor who has appeared in many films and television series. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish family with two brothers and one sister.

Lerner began his acting career with small parts on Off-Broadway shows before making his Broadway debut as Dr. Emmett Brown in the musical version of Back to the Future at The Lyceum Theatre from 1989–1990. His film credits include roles such as Judge Harry Stone on Night Court (1984), Arnold Burns on Bob Roberts (1992), Rabbi Marshak on A Serious Man (2009) and Abe Hornstine in Lady Bird (2017). He also had a recurring role as Jack Galardi, father of mob boss Tony Soprano’s wife Carmela, for thirteen episodes of HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Sopranos beginning in 2002.

In addition to acting, Lerner is also a philanthropist actively involved with numerous charities including Seeds Of Peace International Camp where he serves on their Board Of Directors; Step Up Women’s Network whose mission is “to inspire girls from underprivileged backgrounds to become confident leaders by providing them access to education through mentorship programs”; Project ALS which works towards curing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis; Gilda’s Club NYC dedicated “to provide free emotional health care for people living with cancer or HIV/AIDS”; and Citymeals On Wheels which delivers meals year round those facing hunger due its age or illness.

In 2017 Michael won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie For his portrayal of Abe Hornstine in Ladybird alongside co-star Saoirse Ronan
