The season typically runs from November through March, culminating with the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (also known as “March Madness”). History The first recorded instance of men’s college basketball took place on January 15th, 1896 when Yale University defeated Penn 6-4 in a game held at Madison Square Garden. Since then it has grown exponentially to become one of America’s premier spectator sports and entertainment experiences. By 1953 more than 250 schools were fielding Varsity teams across all three divisions –I , II and III–of NCAA competition making it second only to football in terms of popularity amongst collegiate athletics programs.
