Massachusetts is a U.S. state located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. The capital of Massachusetts is Boston, which is also its largest city and metropolitan area. It was one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States and it played an important role in American history during colonial times and throughout much of the nation’s early development.

The geography of Massachusetts consists mainly of rolling hills, coastal lowlands, mountains to its westward regions, rivers crisscrossing through them all; with many small islands dotting eastern coastline along Cape Cod Bay stretching inland towards Rhode Island border while Nantucket Sound lies off-shore further eastwards past Martha’s Vineyard island chain nearby – providing ample natural resources for recreation purposes such as whale watching trips or other maritime activities (fishing/boating).
