The Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team, representing the University of Maryland, is a college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Big Ten Conference. The school has had 14 head coaches since it first fielded a varsity team in 1904-05. Under current head coach Mark Turgeon, who took over for Gary Williams after his retirement following 22 years at the helm of the program in 2011, they have won two regular season conference championships and three Big Ten Tournament titles (2016–18).

Under their long time former coach Lefty Driesell through to 2001 when he was replaced by Gary Williams; The Terps made 13 consecutive postseasons including 10 straight NCAA tournament appearances from 1994–2004 with several deep runs into March Madness highlighted by Final Four berths in 1984 & 2001 as well as an Elite Eight appearance in 2003 . During this period known colloquially as “Lefty’s Legacy” or simply ‘the Glory Days’ for Maryland Basketball fans; players such as Joe Smith , Steve Francis , Juan Dixon , Chris Wilcox & Lonny Baxter were some of its more successful alumni who went on to enjoy success at both professional level domestically and abroad.

In addition throughout history many greats have gone onto play professionally locally like all-time great Moses Malone whom was drafted out High School spending one season with them before jumping straight to pros being selected 3rd overall pick 1977 National Basketball Association Draft by Portland Trail Blazers but immediately traded thereafter ending up playing 12 seasons across 4 teams most notably Baltimore Bullets where he became only player ever win league MVP Award twice consecutively 1979 & 1980..

It was also during this era that Len Bias sadly passed away following cocaine overdose shortly after been drafted 2nd overall Boston Celtics 1986 NBA draft just days prior ; although tragedy did not deter other future stars Andre Collins (1990), Walt Williams (1992) Exree Hipp & Keith Booth 1997 coming thru ranks ensure continuation excellence which still remains today albeit less consistent results than glory days under previous regime . In recent years however there are signs resurgence once again particularly 2016 onwards when Melo Trimble arrived campus providing much needed leadership help carry squad back top eventually culminating winning 2018 Big ten postseason championship title beating Purdue Boilermakers 75-66 final game Madison Square Garden New York City captured imagination nation reminding everyone what can achieved given right mix talent ambition desire succeed!
