Marquette Golden Eagles by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 48 The Marquette Golden Eagles are the athletic teams representing Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The school’s athletics program is a member of the NCAA Division I and competes in the Big East Conference for most sports. The men’s basketball team was founded in 1907 and has been among one of college basketball’s premier programs since its inception. They have won five regular season conference championships (2008–09, 2010–11), three tournament titles(2003-04) as well as made seven Sweet Sixteen appearances (1979-80). Notable alumni include Dwyane Wade (’03), Caron Butler (’02), Doc Rivers (’81) and Steve Novak(’06). Other marquee programs at MU include men’s soccer which has competed nationally since 1974 with recent success under current coach Louis Bennett III who led them to 4 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths from 2012 through 2015 including their first ever College Cup appearance in 2013 where they finished runner up losing 2-1 to Indiana Hoosiers. The women’s volleyball team is also quite successful having appeared 17 times on national tournaments out of which 7 were sweet sixteen appearances with two Elite Eight showings . Marquette offers 19 varsity intercollegiate sports: baseball, men’s/women’s basketball; cross country; golf; lacrosse; rowing ; soccer (men/women); softball; tennis – both indoor & outdoor for both genders plus track & field outdoors only for both sexes but no football program exists although it did exist until 1960 when it was dissolved due to budget constraints by then chancellor John P Brennan , while some rumors suggest that there might be an eventual return of MU Football sometime soon into the future per discussions between President Lovell and Athletic Director Bill Scholl .
