It competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football and is one of the most successful clubs in English and European football history with 20 league titles and 12 FA Cup wins. The club was founded in 1878 by workers at Newton Heath LYR Cricket Club. The team originally competed under its original name for 22 years before it changed to Manchester United F.C., which was adopted from 1902 onward after being formally accepted into the Football League following their promotion from Division One North that year. The club’s first competitive match took place on 16 October 1904 against Leicester City Fosse; they won 3-0 away at Filbert Street Stadium thanks to two goals from Jack Peddie plus another goal scored by Herbert Broomfield – leading them to be crowned champions of Division One North just five months later on 25 April 1905 upon beating Burton Swifts 2–1 at home ground Bank Street Ground (later renamed Old Trafford). Since then, Manchester United has gone on amass countless trophies including 13 Premier League titles since 1992/93 season when new manager Sir Alex Ferguson arrived; they were also crowned Champions of Europe three times: 1968 Final against Benfica 4-1 win – becoming only fourth British side ever winning continental title; 1999 Final comeback victory over Bayern Munich completing famous Treble campaign where Red Devils became first British team winning UEFA Champions League trophy twice having previously claimed it back in 1968!
