Malawi by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 61 Malawi, officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on its east and south sides. The capital city is Lilongwe while Blantyre serves as the country’s commercial center. With an estimated population of 18 million people (2018), Malawi ranks among African countries with one of the lowest populations. History The area that now makes up modern-day Malawi has been inhabited since ancient times due to its favorable climate and abundant resources such as fish from Lake Chilwa or game animals in nearby forests/savannas for hunting purposes. When European explorers first arrived in this region during late 19th century colonialism period it was ruled over by several Kingdoms but eventually came under British rule when they colonized Nyasaland Protectorate around 1895 -1907 . In 1964 after gaining independence from Britain ,the name changed from Nyasaland protectorate into current day republic of malawei .Since then there have been regular democratic elections with Bingu wa Mutharika serving two terms between 2004 – 2012 followed by Peter Mutharika who was elected president till present date 2020 Geography & Climate Malawai covers an area about 118400 km2 (45800 sq mi) located mainly within highlands above 900 meters(3000ft )above sea level which gives rise to different climates regions ranging from sub tropical savannah grassland on lower elevations near lake shores/river valleys whereas higher elevation areas like mount Mulanje are more temperate having cooler temperatures year round . Rivers flowing through these mountains form lakes such as lake chirwa ,malombe etc creating habitats for local wildlife species including crocodiles hippopotamus antelopes etc.. Economy Being one most densely populated nations per capita amongst African states ,major concerns facing economy are widespread poverty poor infrastructure / health care system lack job opportunities leading emigration issues etc… Agriculture being main source income contributing almost 40% towards GDP commodities include tea tobacco cotton maize soya beans nuts groundnuts sugarcane livestock products .. Major trading partners include UK USA japan germany france india saudi arabia uae kenya tanzania mozambique zimbabwe china … Tourism industry accounts 10 % GPD attracting visitors historical places cultural attractions national parks beaches resorts island sanctuaries ..etc provide employment generating funds government foreign currency reserves thus aiding growth economic development programs.. . Culture & Religion: Though diverse tribal practices beliefs customs exist majority follows Christianity Protestant catholic denominations also common Hinduism Islam other traditional religions practiced smaller communities villages Kondwani Nkhoma Synod church plays important role social life providing spiritual guidance values morals ethics … Language spoken English widely understood lingua franca Chichewa predominates official language alongside Tumbuka Yao Sena Lomwe… Music dance art craft popular forms entertainment attended festivals parades celebrations mark occasions…. Cuisine varies cuisine depending type ingredients staple food includes nsima served vegetables meat dishes root crops tubers fruits legumes peanuts relishes sauces condiments soups stews porridges brewed drinks others derived europeans indian influences mixed create unique flavors particular areas ….
