Louisiana State Tigers by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 67 The Louisiana State Tigers, commonly referred to as the LSU Tigers, are the athletic teams of Louisiana State University (LSU). The school is a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and competes in Division I of NCAA sports. The university has 21 varsity teams competing in 13 different sports. Originally founded as an agricultural and mechanical college by an act passed by the General Assembly on January 2, 1860, LSU was created with its main purpose being to train students for careers related to agriculture fields such as farming or engineering. However, over time it began offering classes in other areas including liberal arts and sciences resulting in it becoming a four-year degree granting institution. In 1893 athletics were added when football became part of student life at LSU marking its official founding year for competitive sport activities at school grounds. Since then LSUs athletes have become known around the worldfor their success both on field and court . In 1936 women’s basketball team joined men’s baseball squad helping solidify presence across all major collegiate divisions while still maintaining strong reputation amongst academics circles having one two National Championships since first season started back 1923/24 under head coach Harry Rabenhorst who had been coaching mens team prior that date.. Through years various individual athletes have gained recognition due their achievements either during professional careers afterwards like NBA Hall Of Famer Shaquille O’Neal , NFL All-Star Patrick Peterson or Olympic medalists Aliann Pompey among many others contributing towards national pride achieved through sporting excellence every single day they step onto competition arena representing bright colors purple gold.. From humble beginnings organization grown into powerhouse not just within United States but also internationally seen multiple championships won several different leagues most notably Football Bowl Subdivision SEC Championship along with ten titles earned Basketball alone making them second most successful program behind Kentucky Wildcats fourteen overall wins since inception 1948 tournament…. Despite recent struggles which culminated firing long term Head Coach Les Miles 2016 replaced Ed Orgeron officially 2017 rebuilding process already underway positive results expected near future continuing rich tradition established nearly century ago remain hallmark southern hospitality culture region proud represent motto Geaux tigers!
