La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia and its third largest city. It lies in an isolated valley at an elevation of 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level on the Altiplano plateau high in the Andes Mountains. The name “La Paz” comes from a Spanish phrase meaning “peace”, referring to its position as a haven away from warring factions during colonial times. Today La Paz hosts one of Latin America’s most vibrant cities with bustling markets and colorful culture; it also has a unique variety of wildlife that can be seen nowhere else in South America due to its location within two distinct regions – Amazonian jungles and dry deserts.

The economy is largely based on tourism, services, handicrafts production and commerce but there are some important industries such as textiles manufacturing, tin mining (Bolivia being one of top three world producers), petroleum refining along with other extractive activities like hydrocarbons exploitation or natural gas extraction.
