It lies in an isolated valley at an elevation of 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level on the Altiplano plateau high in the Andes Mountains. The name “La Paz” comes from a Spanish phrase meaning “peace”, referring to its position as a haven away from warring factions during colonial times. Today La Paz hosts one of Latin America’s most vibrant cities with bustling markets and colorful culture; it also has a unique variety of wildlife that can be seen nowhere else in South America due to its location within two distinct regions – Amazonian jungles and dry deserts.
