Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 73 The Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team is the intercollegiate men’s basketball program of the University of Kansas. The program is classified in the NCAA Division I and a member of the Big 12 Conference since its foundation in 1907. Under Hall Of Fame head coach, Bill Self, they have won 14 consecutive regular season conference titles from 2005 to 2018 as well as six out of fourteen Big 12 Tournament championships. History Dr James Naismith was hired by Dr Frederick M Philips to start an athletic department at KU back in 1898 with Basketball being one of his first sports taught there thus making it one of oldest programs still active today. The first official game took place on January 22nd 1898 which saw them take victory against Washburn College 16-5 . During this time Phelphs also founded both National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Athletic League Of American Universities (ALAU). In 1922 Phog Allen was appointed as head coach who would go onto lead them through their most successful era before he retired in 1956 where during that period they had made three Final Fours appearances winning two national championships along side several other accolades such as five NAIA Championships & seven Helms Foundation Titles between 1923 & 1953 respectively.. In 1989 Roy Williams became Head Coach leading them until 2003 when Bill Self took over ,this period has seen great success within college basketball with a total tallying up to nine final four appearances ,three NCAA Championships(2008 , 2012 & 2019 ),and 15 straight big twelve regulars seasons title amongst others achievements clearly cementing themselves amongst top teams historically speaking .. Through these years many players have gone on become outstanding professionals some notable ones include Paul Pierce , Danny Manning Joel Embiid etc… Recent Seasons With COVID19 halting last year’s season midway into March 2020 much uncertainty remains about how things will be going forward but regardless after coming off reaching yet another Final Four appearance for 2020-21 are looking poised make more history come 2021 under current roster led by Christian Braun whose impressive freshman campaign notably included him receiving All Freshman Team Honors coupled recent addition Bryce Thompson all eyes shall remain focused upon Lawrence KS come next year..
